Over 200 people from NY, NJ, PA, OH, Washington D.C., and Virginia, visited the USS Battleship New Jersey and paid tribute to Commission Number 1 of the U.S. Navy, Commodore John Barry. The USS New Jersey was the longest, fastest, and most decorated battleships at her decomissioning in 1991. As a Co. Wexford native, Commodore Barry linked the United States with Ireland for service, but also in heritage. The Lord Mayor of Co. Wexford attended, as well as Irish Ambassador to the U.S., Geraldine Byrne Nason. AOH member Ralph Day dressed as Commodore Barry, as we toasted to our past, present, and future of U.S. and Ireland relations and service. Also remembered during the evening was late AOH members John McEnrny and Jack O’Brien whose efforts led to the Commodore Barry statue present today inside of the USNA, unvieled in 2014.
