Keep Irish Heritage namesakes alive in the Public Square

Brothers,

Once again, we’re asking for your support, asking you to encourage every AOH Brother to support Terry Riley and the Herbert Cady Division by adding your name to this important petition and preserve an important piece of Irish Heritage

Colonel John Fitzgerald was an Irish immigrant who – among many accomplishments —  fought in our War of Independence,  became General George Washington’s  aide, was elected mayor of Alexandria, and founded the first Catholic church in Virginia (today’s Basilica of St Mary in Alexandria).  To honor this great Irish-American patriot, Fitzgerald Square  was located on the waterfront  in Alexandria.

However, the Alexandria City Council proposes to rename this monument to our Irish Heritage and Fitzgerald’s legacy as King Street Park.   We know the ‘king” in question was neither an American nor an American hero…

Terry needs more than 1,000 signatures on the petition if we are to influence the city council.  Please sign (and ignore the other petitions at the website)

Follow this link (https://chn.ge/2GHl6MS).   The essence of this petition is to encourage the  City of Alexandria to restore the name Colonel John Fitzgerald Square.

In Our Motto,
Bill Halpin
